Methodology
How we turn published rules and clear assumptions into useful calculator estimates.
Last updated:
Calculation approach
Our calculators use deterministic arithmetic: the same valid inputs and selected rates produce the same result. Calculations run locally in your browser. Inputs are checked before use, and results are formatted consistently in pounds and pence where relevant.
Rules, rates and review dates
Rate-sensitive tools use centrally maintained data with tax years, effective dates and source references. Review dates tell you when the published rules were last checked, not a guarantee that no changes have occurred since. Historical tax years, where offered, remain separate from current-year rates.
Testing and examples
Automated tests cover normal cases, thresholds and invalid inputs. Worked examples help explain the calculation. Display rounding may create small differences from summing rounded line items; each calculator’s explanation sets out relevant conventions.
Assumptions and limitations
Each tool describes its scope and exclusions. Annual estimates may differ from payroll calculations applied per pay period. Personal tax codes, reliefs and circumstances can affect actual liabilities. Check the relevant official source before acting on a result.
Corrections and feedback
If you spot a discrepancy, send a correction report with the calculator URL, non-sensitive example inputs and a supporting source. We use reports to investigate calculations and explanations.
